Q: Which size of the Medela PersonalFit™ PLUS breast shield should I choose?
A: We recommend using either a ruler or tape measure to find the diameter of your nipple at base in millimeters (mm). For an accurate measurement, do not include your areola.

This will help you to determine the breast shield size required. So for example, if your nipple size measurements came to  16 mm in diameter, we would then recommend a Medela breast shield size is 21 mm.

Q: Are breast shields the same as flanges?
A: Yes they are. Breast pump flanges are also known as breast shields which is the plastic part of your breast pump that fits directly over your nipple to form a seal around the areola when breast pumping. This flange or shield creates a vacuum seal that is intended to gently draw your nipple into the flange/shield tunnel for milk extraction.

Q: How do I know if my flange is too big?
A: If your areola, which is the part around your nipple, is drawn into the flange during pumping or you have experienced swelling and soreness of the areola area and the base of your nipple when you take the shield off after breast pumping, these are all signs that the shields are too big.

Q: How often should you replace breast shields?
A: Breast shields should be replaced every 6 months or so. After continuous, extensive use, the breast shields tend to collect residue, can crack or even become discolored over time. However in some instances, if you find any cracks, tears or warping, these are signs that you should replace your shields even sooner than expected to help ensure and enjoyable, efficient breast pumping experience.

Q: Can you reuse breast shields?
A: Yes you can. They are not meant to be disposable and can last up to 6 months just with regular cleaning.

After breast pumping, rinse the breast shield in high quality cold water and then wash in hot, soapy water or with a mild detergent then rinse well. Store in a clean, dry place.

Q: Can a breast shield decrease milk supply?
A: Yes and no. The Medela PersonalFit™ PLUS Breast Shield is specifically designed to be as comfortable as possible as well as to provide optimal and efficient extraction of breast milk during pumping. However, using a size of breast shield that is incorrect may result in the exact opposite result. Due to discomfort and incorrect placement of the nipple during pumping, less milk would be extracted and we highly recommend consulting with our sizing guide in order for you to choose the best breast shield for you.
